To Get to the Other Side

Mentor: Ellen Whittet

What’s the deal with stand-up comedy? In this half-funny half-tragic creative nonfiction piece, I investigate the past and present stand-up comedy scene and its troubling intersection with the world of sexual misconduct. Maybe it’s rape jokes, maybe it’s comedians committing sexual assault – but in a world where anyone can be anything, why can’t survivors be funny? Putting a feminist lens on the world of comedy, I aim to highlight some of the brilliant women that use comedy to reclaim their own narratives of assault, before taking on the challenge of doing so myself. With this powerful and deeply personal piece, I aim to shift the conversations taking place about “rape jokes” and put the power back in the hands of those who deserve it most.
