Mindfulness in the Workplace, by Isabelle Rodriguez

Mindfulness refers to "the innate capacity of the mind to be aware of the present moment, just as it is" (Institute for Mindful Leadership, 2018). Originally viewed as a fringe movement, today mindfulness has been integrated into the fields of business, science, education, and fitness. According to the World Health Organization, stress costs American businesses an estimated $300 billion annually. Recognizing the value of employee well-being, mindfulness practices have been adopted by a variety of big-name companies, such as Target, General Mills, Intel, and Google. My project aims to dispel the idea that mindfulness in the workplace is just a trend by asking: how exactly are businesses incorporating mindfulness into their business practices? What is the fundamental effect mindfulness has not just on employees, but on an organization overall? How does this affect the future generation of business leaders? Identifying the benefits and losses of each approach, I will utilize my findings to develop a workshop on Mindful Leadership offered to college students, the future business leaders of America.
