Richard Brautigan’s book A Confederate General from Big Sur explores themes regarding anti-authoritarianism, self-inquiry and alternative lifestyles through its characters. My project is to create a modern screenplay adaptation of the book that tells the story through a lens that resonates better with contemporary audiences. The focus of the project is on the lies the book’s characters tell to create new identities for themselves that reflect their surroundings. When they move to Big Sur, all the characters involved in the story change their identity during the time they live in the area. To aid the completion of this project, interviews will be conducted with people who’ve gone to the Big Sur in the past. In adapting A Confederate General from Big Sur to the screen, I hope to create a compelling story that explores how the book’s characters flee authoritarianism, lead alternative lifestyles, and come to understand themselves better in the Big Sur.
